The process of acid-washing
Before acid-washing your pool, we have to drain it with a sump pump. The drained walls should be wet when the HCL (hydrochloric acid) is applied. HCL is dangerous and we have to wear protective clothing to avoid any hazard. We mix water and HCL in the ratio of 1:1 and spray the solution with a hose to all surfaces of the pool. The acidic solution has to be scrubbed into the surfaces for half a minute with a brush. Then we have to rinse the acid completely so that it doesn’t stick to the pool plaster permanently. We might repeat the process if the stains were severe. Soda ash comes in handy to neutralize the acidic condition. The cleaning water is pumped out of the pool and fresh water used to refill it.
When does your pool require acid washing?
A general rule of thumb is to acid wash a regularly maintained pool after every 5-7 years. Frequent washing can wear out the plaster as the acid peels off small layers each time it is applied. Note that acid wash is only for heavy dirt. Manual scrubbing is sufficient for slightly dirty pools. Vinyl linings must never be washed with acid because they are delicate. For such types of pools, mild detergents can suffice.
