Every few years your pool should be drained to clear out the collected buildup of small organic material that doesn't get filtered out. Normal chlorine and other pool cleaning chemicals do not halt the buildup of phosphate. Chlorine is mainly used to stop other bacteria like algae from growing. But the algae actually consumes the phosphate meaning rapid growth of algae whenever it appears. Too much phosphate in your pool can limit the effect ability of your pool chlorine. You do not want to have high phosphate levels unless you can handle cleaning algae all year long.

By draining your pool, it becomes much easier to clear the phosphate out and make it easier on you to keep your pool clean. Without an abundant amount of phosphate, there is less food for algae to feed off of and grow.
